Location:
Grønlia (the location) is an interesting point south of Oslo where the city changes from the downtown urban structures to a more peri-urban topography. The location also contains some amazing landscape features; notably the trajectory from the hillside behind the stadium to the small islands in the fjord. Grønlia is also one of the first areas you encounter if you come to Oslo by fjord or by the main road from the south.
Architecture:
We worked out three principles for our design.
One was to design a stadium that took the location by the water seriously. That means not only designing a building by the water, but using water as an element in our architecture and in creating a universal experience when visiting the building. If you could go sailing among the islands a Sunday morning, then dock at one of the floating piers shooting out from the stadium body in the evening and go see a football match, it would be a unique experience regardless of your interest in football.
Another factor was to design a stadium which had an architectural language honest to the activity football. We wanted to create a new interpretation of the old Colosseum, an arena for achievements, instead of a shopping mall with a football field at its centre.
Third, a building placed at Grønlia will be seen from a number of angles in Oslo while being located a short walk from downtown along the future waterfront. We therefore wanted to create a notable form that you would recognize both as an object from a distance, and as a more fragmented form of architecture when you get closer. The result was a building consisting of two elements, “the core”, which became the arena and the facilities, and “the shell” which became the roof and defined the stadium as an object. Between those two elements, the infrastructural zones function as impromptu social areas that come to life before, in between, and after matches.
